On Wednesday January 6th 2016, a grand jury indicted DPS Trooper Brian Encinia. The arresting officer that pulled over 28 year old Sandra Bland for failure to use proper lane change signal in July 2015 in the town of Prairie View Texas. Bland was found dead in her Waller County jail cell three days later, although her death was suspected to be a homicide, it was ruled a suicide by the medical examiner. Encinia was indicted on perjury charges, prosecutors said that he lied on the written report about the traffic stop. “I had Bland exit the vehicle to further conduct a safe traffic investigation” stated in the report written by Encinia, however after several reviews of the dash cam video from that day, the prosecutors nor the jury believed his story.Perjury is a Class A misdemeanor in which Brian Encinia could face up to a year in prison along with a $4,000 fine if convicted. Perjury is the only charge that the grand jury issued an indictment on said special prosecutor Sean McDonald. For now no other indictments have been issued. This is a small step in the direction of justice for the family and friends of Sandra Bland although much still needs to be done within the justice system, this is a start.
